Kirinyaga University Tuition Complex Phase 1

After being upgraded from a Technical College to a University there was need to upgrade the facilities due to rising demand for services as well as the requirement by the Commssion for University education. The management decided to develop a new complex with the undergraduate tuition block being the first building. The task was to design a sustainable building and our team did that work with a lot of passion. The University was seeking an identity that they could relate to and we settled on Kikuyu Kiondo as a concept. The Kiondo(making) was a popular economic activity amongst the Kikuyu women and a major artifact. The horizontal detail at the entrance and the dome at the central atrium borrow heavily and is an abstraction of the Kiondo. The building runs fully on solar power, is oriented in the North South direction, has an atrium that encourages stack effect and proper airflow. Many other design elements make it a sustainable building.
